Psalms 109

Vengeance Invoked upon Adversaries.

For the music director. A Psalm of David.

1 aGod of my praise,
bDo not be silent!
2 For they have opened a
Lit wicked mouth and the deceitful
wicked and ddeceitful mouth against me;
They have spoken
Lit with
against me with a flying tongue.
3 They have also surrounded me with words of hatred,
And have fought against me gwithout cause.
4 In return hfor my love they act as my accusers;
But iI am in prayer.
5 So they have
Lit laid upon me
,
krepaid me evil for good,
And lhatred for my love.

6 Appoint a wicked person over him,
And may an
Or adversary, Satan
,
naccuser stand at his right hand.
7 When he is judged, may he ocome out guilty,
And may his pprayer become sin.
8 May qhis days be few;
May ranother take his office.
9 May his schildren be fatherless,
And his twife a widow.
10 May his uchildren wander about and beg;
And may they vseek sustenance
Or out of their desolate places
far from their ruined homes.
11 May xthe creditor
Lit ensnare, strike at
seize everything that he has,
And may zstrangers plunder the product of his labor.
12 May there be none to
Lit continue
,
abextend kindness to him,
Nor acany to be gracious to his fatherless children.
13 May his addescendants be
Lit for cutting off
eliminated;
May their afname be wiped out in a following generation.

14 May agthe guilt of his fathers be remembered
Lit to
before the Lord,
And do not let the sin of his mother be aiwiped out.
15 May ajthey be before the Lord continually,
So that He may akeliminate their memory from the earth;
16 Because he did not remember to show mercy,
But persecuted the alafflicted and needy person,
And the amdespondent in heart, to anput them to death.
17 He also loved cursing, so aoit came to him;
And he did not delight in blessing, so it was far from him.
18 But he apclothed himself with cursing as with his garment,
And it aqentered
Lit his inward parts
his body like water,
And like oil into his bones.
19 May it be to him as asa garment with which he covers himself,
And as a belt which he constantly atwears around himself.
20 May this be the aureward of my accusers from the Lord,
And of those who avspeak evil against my soul.

21 But You,
Heb YHWH, usually rendered Lord
God, the Lord, deal kindly with me axfor the sake of Your name;
Because ayYour mercy is good, rescue me;
22 For azI am afflicted and needy,
And
Lit one has pierced my heart within me
my heart is bbwounded within me.
23 I am passing bclike a shadow when it lengthens;
I am shaken off bdlike the locust.
24 My beknees
Or totter
are weak from bgfasting,
And my flesh has grown lean, without fatness.
25 I also have become a bhdisgrace to them;
When they see me, they bishake their head.

26 bjHelp me, Lord my God;
Save me according to Your mercy.
27
Or That they may know
And may they blknow that this is Your hand;
You, Lord, have done it.
28 bmThey will curse, but You bless;
When they arise, they will be ashamed,
But Your bnservant will be glad.
29
Or My accusers will be
May bpmy accusers be clothed with dishonor,
And
Or they will cover
may they brcover themselves with their own shame as with a robe.

30 With my mouth I will give thanks abundantly to the Lord;
And bsI will praise Him in the midst of many.
31 For He stands btat the right hand of the needy,
To save him from those who bujudge his soul.
